[1231] Of AllMalaysian Blogger Project might not be a friend of free speech

Routine called me to get my daily dose of Project Petaling Street, a Malaysian blogtal. The zeitgeist at the particular moment I surfed the blogtal was AllMalaysian Blogger Project, a site run by The Star, in association with Genting.

Curious, I checked it out and found this:

What is it?

The AllMalaysian Bloggers Project (AMBP) is an undertaking of the folks behind the AllMalaysia.info website, all of whom believe strongly in the freedom of speech.

All good and dandy but:

Who is it for?

Malaysian bloggers. Your blog can be about anything – as long as it’s not subversive..

Define subversive. To whom?

I am tired of pretender. Freedom of speech, kononnya

p/s — I have received information that AllMalaysian Blogger Project has changed the wording of the offending sentence. Now, roughly two days after I blogged about it, the word subversive is gone and replaced with unlawful:

Malaysian bloggers. Your blog can be about anything – as long as it’s not unlawful, pornographic or in, er, bad taste – but only those with a Malaysian slant will be considered for contest prizes.

But, but, but… Thomas Jefferson said:

I do not add ‘within the limits of the law’ because law is often but the tyrant’s will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

Hehehe…

This is a feeble attempt to make Malaysian bloggers toe the line? Or is it making it easy to track bloggers? Shall leave it to your imagination. Cheers if you do join. Hope you win. I won’t bother joining. Why does one blog anyway?

Ah dude, my objection is to their initial use of the word subversive. The remark against unlawful is made in jest.

Regardless, there are just laws and unjust law, the good laws and the bad suppressive laws. Which part of the laws are you willing to submit?

I am certainly not willing to submit to all laws, especially the tyrannical ones, including the one that allows kidnapping of children in the name of religion.

p/s – writing how to rape a girl is not raping a girl. Two different matters. I highly doubt a person could be held because he/she wrote how to rape somebody, no matter how crass that guide would be.

Dude, you live in Malaysia, and hence you will be subject to its laws. “Freedom of expression”, is a concept that exist in a perfect world. If you were to post Instruction on how to rape a 9 year old girl, in any country you will be prosecuted by Law of that country as Rape is iligeal. What about your freedom to post whatever you want? What happens there? There is no such thing as total freedom living in an unperfect world. There is nothing wrong with saying You can post anything that is not illegeal. They are excersizing due responsibility, less they are brought forth on charges because of something somebody else wrote.
