About the __earthinc

So, you are here. You are probably curious with the deal here. Here is what I think has been going on with this blog.

When I first started blogging in 2001, I had expected this site of mine to be kind of a personal site, a place for my reflection on life, experience and such. As I remember, year 2001 was the time where the word blog was rather obscure and very few knew about it. Back then, what is now known as blog was called, merely, personal website. Blog was not even accepted as a noun in leading dictionaries. More than two years later, you must agree that blog is more than a noun. It is a culture (okay, 12 years later, maybe less so).

My first ever blog, a pre-__earthinc if I may say so, was hosted at Blogspot, Blogger’s site (and nobody had heard of Blogger, a startup company or the founder Evhead yet) and I called the blog I am above grammar. In the blog, I wrote stuff, some of my opinion on things I read on the news, loads of personal feelings and too much nonsense. The phrase I am above grammar is a translation of ego sum rex Romanus, et supra grammaticam, uttered by the Holy Roman Emperor, Sigismund. It aptly described my attitude and the nature of the blog at that time — too young, too immature and too proud. If one reads some of the earlier postings of mine, some of the entries would sound extremely condescending. But of course, the Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire.

Then my political belief reached a certain kind of level, a level where one starts to become aware of one’s surrounding and critical. It was idealism. It was around this time when green ideologies started to gradually break into my very existence. This was when I first discovered the phrase die grünen: ökologisch, sozial, basisdemokratisch, gewaltfrei. In German, it means, the green: ecologically, socially, democratically, non-violently.

Conservation becomes a way of life to me. I recycle (usually anyway), I switch off the light whenever I don’t need it (but the computer is on 24/7), refuse to get a car (this might be a little bit extreme but Ann Arbor’s terrible snow is another contributing reason), etc.

So, I changed the blog name from I am above grammar to The __earth Inc, imaging I was a CEO of some firm that fights for the environment. Childish to say the least but it was a great make-believe. By this time, I started to refrain from expressing personal feeling. Instead, I tried to focus on presenting my perspective on current stuff; mostly bullshit however. Later, I shed the childishness behind and called my site The __earthinc, and tried to be a little bit more serious.

While struggling with green philosophies and trying to form my own identity, I started to encounter and re-encounter many other schools of thought — from left to the right. Like most people, I adore some, I scorn some. While in the transition, I found myself in the realm that I love — economics. Economics somewhat completed my ideological transition and thanks to it, my political thinking reached some sort of maturity (still idealized nonetheless; not too matured still).

In the German phrase on the green, I have always consider gewaltfrei as free will instead of the widely understood meaning of non-violence. That one word later describes the other part of me, a libertarian; freedom lover.

In the end, after making up my mind. I am a libertarian. I used to claim to be a green libertarian but I thought the term green might have been misleading. I later realized that my fondness for “greenness” was merely my acknowledgment that market does fail. Here, market failures are understood by those exposed to the field of economics, not by those on the left who use the term liberally. So, I dropped the term green.

Yeah, I like that. This is a libertarian blog.

And oh, it is a photoblog whenever I feel like it. And, er, sometimes about Ajax Amsterdam.

And Manchester United sucks.

About me

Curious about me?

Hafiz at the School of Music, U of Michigan, Ann Arbor

I’m just a tiny guy whom is trying to make his way into the weird world. More?

An economics graduate thanks firstly to the University of Michigan and later the University of Sydney. So, by training, I am an economist. Professionally? I was previously an economist at ECM Libra Investment Bank. At the moment, I am with FT Confidential Research, a research house under the Financial Times.

I attended the Malay College Kuala Kangsar for high school, if you need to know.

I used to run ReMag, an online magazine for ReCom.org. Occasionally, I did write for it, abusing my power as the editor-in-chief. It died and it would take several more years before I wrote for some online publication again. First it was The Cicak. Later, it was Bolehland. I used to be a columnist at The Malaysian Insider, Selangor Times and a co-contributor to a column at The Sun. Now, I sporadically contribute columns to the Malay Mail Online. My writings have appeared in other Malaysian newspapers but I do not keep track of those.

Looking back, wow. That is a huge jump for me. Go me, eh? I know. I am so full of myself. Forgive me.

I also help at the libertarian Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs in Malaysia.

There were other little things like Metroblogging and Asia’s Perfect Ten but those are small potatoes by any stretch of imagination.

p/s — if you’ve actually managed to make it to this sentence, you really need to do something with your life already.
