[37] Of securing privacy online

Voila!!! The 500th visitor is from Carnegie Mellon University of Pittsburgh. I think I know who it is but it’s not important for me to reward her. It could be a he but I definitely think it’s a she.

Internet security – one of my greatest concerns for this week. I’ve installed a few firewalls and these firewalls work by blocking access to my computer (as any firewall would) and by telling me the ip addresses of the intruding persons or computers. I found out that most of the intrusions were harmless. I’d also for the first time tried to gain access into somebody else’s computer without permission. I attempted a successful invasion against a computer in RPI, New York. It wasn’t an invasion actually. It was merely a “data collection” activity. The activity was launched on my part as to race with that other person of whom would be a better data gatherer. I did nothing that could cause harm on that computer. Unfortunately the other person found out who accessed his computing machine. I did my best but the other guy is definitely a better gatherer. Nevertheless, I’ve obtained his ip.

It surprises me how the most important private information of an internet surfer can easily be obtained. With the ip address, one could find out the operating system and server information of another person easily. What was once a private information, now is a public information. It’s amazing how this scenario had been decribed by George Orwell even before the creation of the internet. Truly, privacy does not exist. Truly, George Orwell has seen the future as clearly as God would have perceived.

At this moment, I have more than 30 ip addresses in my diskette, collected through various methods. These ip addresses belong to many friends that I’ve met and known throughout the years.

Frightened of losing my privacy, I’m forcing myself to learn on how to mask my ip address from any unforeseen lurkers. Once my effort is a success, I’ll be the innocent shadow who will always be by your side.

I believe today, paranoia is not a psychological problem anymore. It’s now a must for each and everyone of us.

Well, life goes on.

This spring, __earth.blogspot.com will be moved to earthInc.da.ru. Be sure to check it out next week.

By the way, I took another test and guess who am I?

Which tarot card are you?
