[1304] Of climbing up on Solsbury Hill

Exactly a week ago, I found myself on top of one of the hills that make up the Klang Gates Ridge.

Some rights reserved. By Mohd Hafiz Noor Shams.

While I was up there, there were a few songs that kept playing in my mine. One of them was Peter Gabriel’s Solsbury Hill. Somehow, it was the right song for the right place at the right time.

Anyway, I think I have found a new hobby: solo climbing. So far in my life, there is no hobby that expresses my individualism as much as solo climbing. Somehow, solo climbing has strong connotation to obstacles to individualist effort to achieve greater height, literally. More importantly, I have found its philosophical attachment as extremely attractive. That, in turn, in one way or another, reminds me of Ayn Rand.

[1151] Mengenai merindui kehijauan kebebasan

Baring sebentar di atas permaidani;
terfikir sejenak tentang kehidupan;
sibuk mengejar harta dan nama;
mula terasa kebosanan hidup.

Teringat kembali turunnya salji;
sungguh tenang melihat ke luar;
masih segar di dalam ingatan;
bermimpi tentang ketenangan hidup.

Sedih mengenang kebebasan dahulu;
mahu kembali ke masa lepas;
biru langit di musim bunga;
terbang tanpa belenggu di kaki.

Malangnya hidup di menara tinggi;
Bagaimanakah ini yang dicitakan dahulu?
Tolong! Ku rindu tumbuhan menghijau;
Semangat luntur setelah berpisah.

[1123] Of the fifth day and it is still going down

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index is down for more than 4.5% today; this is the fifth consecutive day the index closes lower than the previous day. If it had gone another 1.5% down, the fall would have matched the day when the dragon sneezes. In fact, at around 1500 hours, it was scary.

It is especially hurtful when I see my stocks go down in prices like that. But I suppose, I should be optimistic and be prepared to buy as many stocks as possible soon, if indeed this fall is temporary. Where is the animal spirit when one needs it?

Oh Great One, possess us and bring us something less than irrational exuberance.

And oh Greenspan, please shut up.

[1118] Of congratulations, sir

My headmaster while I was at the Malay College has been promoted:

PUTRAJAYA: Chief Inspector of Schools Alimuddin Mohd Dom has been promoted Deputy Director-General (Schools) at the Education Ministry.

Alimuddin, whose appointment was effective yesterday, received the news from Director-General of Education Datuk Dr Ahamad Sipon three days ago. [Alimuddin named Deputy D-G in charge of schools. The Star, March 2 2007]

Therefore, congratulations sir!

The last time I met him was last year during a brainstorming session.
