[997] Of medals, population and wealth at the 2006 Asian Games

In the last Southeast Asian Games held in the Philippines, a Southeast Asian blogger suggested that there’s a correlation between the number of medals won by a country with the country’s population size and wealth. That sounds reasonable to me. With respect to the ongoing Asian Games at Doha, let’s test it.

Let’s touch on the data first. I use 2005 GDP at PPP (IMF) and population size of Asiad country-participants as listed at Wikipedia. The GDP at PPP is used as a proxy variable to wealth. Data on medals collected by countries as of 0400 Greenwich time is obtained from the official site of the 2006 Asiad. In order to differentiate between gold, silver and bronze, I assign three points to gold, two to silver and one to bronze. I have the all the data in one file and you may have it if you’d like to play around with it.

I got MS Excel to run the necessary regression. I know, it’s a bad choice but I don’t have access to other statistical software. I did download some free, legit softwares off the internet but that was too much hassle.

So, on MS Excel, I regressed medal points — number of medals multiplied by point assigned — on population per thousand and GDP at PPP per million.

Before I reveal the result, let’s talk about my initial hunch. I’d think population size and wealth have positive relationship to medals won by countries. To generalize it further, if we take medals won as a proxy to strength in sports, population size and wealth would contribute positively to countries’ strength in sports. What do you think about that?

Now, the result supports that wealth increases the number of medal won. Specifically, each billion of GDP at PPP leads to a 0.0008 increase in medal point, with all else constant of course.

The surprise comes from the correlation between population size and number of medal won. Each thousand leads to 0.0002 decrease in medal point; an inverse relationship, with the typical caveat, ceteris paribus.

The output:

Honestly, I’m kind of skeptical of my own regression.

Regardless, on a different set of regression – medal points on GDP at PPP per capita – reveals that a dollar increase in GDP (PPP) per capita increases medal point at about 0.0018, ceteris paribus. The regression result if you’re interested in it:

How significant are the figures?

[988] Of who’s up against Ohio State now?

The Trojans lost to the Bruins. I didn’t expect that:

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Southern California’s dejected players trudged off the Rose Bowl field, oblivious to the celebration going on around them.

Their national championship hopes had just ended with the biggest upset of the season.

UCLA knocked No. 2 USC out of the Bowl Championship Series title game with a stunning 13-9 victory over its crosstown rival Saturday. The Bruins did it with a vastly improved defense and a quarterback starting on three days’ notice.

With the Trojans completely out of the picture as far as national championship is concerned, we have only two teams to pick and match against Ohio State: Florida and Michigan.

I obviously prefer Michigan but let Michigan and Florida duke ’em out! Let’s have a playoff just to determine who should be up against the Fuckeyes.

And at the NYT:

The Bruins won despite just 235 yards of total offense and not completing a pass of more than 21 yards.

“I’m not going to sleep tonight,” Markey [Bruins tailback] said, smiling. “I’m not going to sleep for days.”

Much like folks in Ann Arbor, Mich., and Gainesville, Fla., but for very different reasons.

Word.

p/s – this is tragic:

BEIT HANOUN, Gaza (Reuters) – Hussein Kafarneh is a muezzin without a mosque.

For nearly 30 years he led the traditional call to prayer at Beit Hanoun’s al-Nasser shrine, one of the oldest mosques in Gaza, climbing the twisting steps to the top of the white stone minaret five times a day.

His father did the same for 40 years before him.

Then, on November 3 this year, as Israeli forces pursued an offensive in Gaza, they clashed with Palestinian militants holed up inside and nearby the mosque, using it as cover.

A dramatic stand-off ensued, with Israeli tanks aiming their barrels toward the shrine and around 60 well-armed militants firing rounds back toward the Israelis.

I blame both sides.

[971] Of goodbye Bo

This must the one of the worst weeks in years. First, it was Milton Friedman. Today, the great Bo passes away:

Nov. 17 (Bloomberg) — Former University of Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler died after being taken to the hospital after collapsing while taping a television show, WXYZ- TV in Detroit reported.

The 77-year-old Schembechler was taken to Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan, at about 9:45 a.m. New York time after passing out during a taping of his weekly television show, said Southfield Police Detective Steve Schneider. Police escorted the ambulance to the hospital.

Providence Hospital spokesman Brian Taylor couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Goodbye Bo. My deepest condolences to the Schembechler.

Sometimes, I forget how precious life is. It’s easy to forget when life is going for the better; when everything is sailing smoothly for you. I’m glad that today, something reminds me of the value of life. How priceless it is.

I’ve only seen Bo just once, from afar. It was on my graduation day. Me, in a black robe, with a golden tassel on top of a funny headpiece. And he, way in front, receiving an honorary degree, if I’m not mistaken, from the President. It was cold but Bo made me, and a whole lot of others, felt warm. The warmth he offered could be felt far and beyond. If you could be there, you would feel it too.

Bo would probably like to see Michigan wins over Ohio State on Saturday.

No.

He will like it. I’m positive of it.

All the more reason for Michigan to win at Columbus on Saturday. This has become more than about winning The Game. It’s more than about national championship. It’s more than getting the bragging right. This is about honoring Bo, a person that contributed so vastly to Michigan and its culture.

Bo, you gave us a reason to be proud of whom we are. Nothing less.

Hail to the victors, valiant.

Hail…

Needless to say, something big is going to happen. Bring on the drunkards from the down smelly south.

And yes, you Buckeyes may shout out loud “Muck Fichigan” to us Wolverines. But us Wolverines will be shouting back “Buck the Fuckeyes”.

Go Blue!

p/s – congratulations Princeton for your little victory against Yale.

NEW HAVEN, Nov. 11 — A year ago, Princeton was the team playing at home and holding a commanding lead, an Ivy League football title nearly in its grasp. Then, in a span of 74 seconds, Princeton gave up two touchdowns and lost to Yale, and the Tigers were unable to claim the league championship.

An Ivy League game. Hahahahahaha!

Sorry, I couldn’t help it.
