[199] Of if I ruled the world…

If everything in this world rested on me, I will make sure that the world will be a greener place to live in. All of my policies will be based on three of the Green Four Pillars – okologisch (ecological sound), sozial (social stability) and basisdemokratisch (democratic society).

The economy will not be based simply on capitalism. There are more to life than just capitals. Though free trade is important, certain things will be given some leeway, of such as subsidies so important industries to the green ideology may flourish for the benefit of the whole. Taxes and tariffs will still play an important role in a laissez faire market.

The most important thing that will be made compulsory is the pollution market. Each firm will have its own amount of pollution allowed to be produced. Of course, the amount of pollution it is entitled to will vary according to its size and sector. In this way, the firm will be allowed to do whatever it wants with the permit as long as the activity is within the boundary of the law. Furthermore, the firm will need to pay for each extra ton of pollution it makes as a fine. The amount fine will be large enough as to offset the violating firm profit. In this, it is hoped that the fine will be a sufficient deterrent without hurting the industry greatly.

The only way to produce more products is to obtain pollution permit first. However, it cannot obtain such permit directly from the government but rather, it needs to buy the extra privilege from other firm that uses only partially of their share. Despite this, the government still has the ability to issue such permit as it deems necessary for a sustainable economic growth of a particular sector and not of a particular firm. It is important to state that the permit transaction between firms will still be needed to be approved by the government. In a way, this is similar to the coupon system when in the market, both monetary and coupon units are used for transaction activities. Through this, carbon based economy or rather green economy will be born.

The government on the other hand distributes the permits that in turn given by a world body that regulates the permit circulation internationally. Each country will receive a particular amount of permit after that particular country’s industry, population, resources and area size are considered. A world body, perhaps a neo-WTO will be given the power to make sure that the carbon trading will run smoothly on the international level.

Reward and punishment philosophy will be upheld in order to convince countries to accept this economy. Economic sanction will be imposed on countries that commit serious environmental breach. Most common sanction will be the withdrawal of pollution permits. The heaviest penalty would be an economic isolation on all sorts of goods save essential such as food and medicine. However, environmental violation does not include environmental accidents though inaction may lead to moderate punishment. Through this, it is hoped that pollution problem will be reduced significantly.

Furthermore, developed countries will be demanded to commit a small portion of its income, if it could be afforded, to contribute to global organizations such as the Red Cross/Red Crescent and the UN to fight hunger and poverty. The contributors will be rewarded with extra pollution permits at a discounted price.

Income originated from the sale of pollution permits will be used as near free aids to the third world nations. The aid however will be given as long as the receiver commits itself to green economy. At the first sign of diversion from green economy, the receiver will need to repay the aid in full plus backdated interest.

Politically, countries’ traditional borders will be preserved due to cultural difference but within countries, a new kind of political lines will emerge – the ecoregions. Ecoregions are, as stated in Wikipedia, area that has strong ecological connection to other area. These areas will be considered as one political unit. As a simple example, Southeast Asia will be considered as one ecoregion due to its vegetation similarity throughout the region. In introducing new political border, it is hoped that problem such as polluted river or burning forest will be able to be fought effectively. Though this seems to be difficult and annoying redistribution, such method has already been carried among the great lakes states such as Michigan, Illinois and Ontario (3 of the 11 members of the Great Lakes Commission) in order to manage the administrative matters concerning the great lakes. Note that this caucus crosses the US-Canada border.

Free will and democracy will be paramount in governance though it will not be as free as the libertarians would like. Minimal restrictions will be applied in order to maintain social order. Then again, freedom of expression will be observed to almost the fullest extend.
Socially, recycling will be the way of life. To make it a reality, Californian styled system will be practiced. Recyclable consumer products (i.e. cans, bottle etc.) will be sold a little bit higher than its market price. The additional cents will be returned to the buyer once the post-consumer product is returned back to any recycling center. Of course, the price of recyclable product will be lower than any non-recyclable counterpart so as to encourage consumer to buy recyclable product.

Population will be redistributed to various areas so one area will not have too dense with Humans. Also, population control will be enforced through. By doing this, not only could the government prevent overstraining the ecosystem but the social standard including the health system could also be maintained with high standard. Draconian population control however will not be allowed in the constitution because of the observance ofhuman rights.

The opening of new lands will be minimized. Land will only be allowed to be opened for essential activities when it is needed. Land opening for holiday resort, golf course and such will be made difficult if not impossible. Also, to reduce environmental impact due to development, tight Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will be made compulsory to every project without exception.

Transportation also plays an important role in pollution control. To combat pollution, public transportation will be the main method of moving around and the vehicles ownership will be discouraged by the introduction of special tariffs and taxes. Regular public transportation users (including carpoolers) will be rewarded with various schemes such as privilege in government and privately controlled services. In addition, car manufacturers will be needed to meet high environmental standard (engine efficiency and such) before their products are allowed to hit the street.

Area on land and in the water (the Amazon, Great Coral Reef etc.) that are recognized as essential to biodiversity will be preserved aggressively. No development will be tolerated in the area and violation will be met to the fullest extend of the law.

The Earth will be given time to adapt to us and repair herself. We as Humans will not only give the Earth time, we will also be proactive in repairing her. In this, the hope of a peaceful coexistence between Humans, other biotics, abiotics and Gaia will come to reality.

[114] Of renewed concern on privacy

It is getting too boring here and I desperately want to get out of this city for the rest of the hols. Ann Arbor is undoubtedly a small town but at least, livelier than some town. West Lafayette, for instance, hmm…

On other note, The __earthinc has received unusual type of visitors and new referrers. I don’t mind about the referrers but the new kind of visitor has made me to be a little bit cautious of what I will write. Of course, I have never criticized anybody that I know personally here. I’ve been very careful with that. My concern is that I’ve mistakenly identify a few IP address belonging to a few particular persons. After staying up in north and physically checking the IP and its port, I sure am surprise to see my failure to identify those IP accurately. Nevertheless, now, I have identified the exact the building. The current need needs me to study how the building network is mapped. Once that is accomplished, my IP directory will be more accurate.

Although I have a list of list, I rather not expose or share it with the public. Exposing people’s IP to the public will no doubt bring too much attention. This is what I’ve learnt from a stranger. He was and still is compiling a HUGE list of IP, comparable to ARIN, APNIC and a few other organizations. Not only he compiled it, he actually posts it on the web and updates it in the interval of a few months. As a direct consequence, legal action is being made against him. The charge made – the violation of privacy.

I am not planning to expose my list but the charge made against this guy is certainly baseless. The only violation he made was spreading the Internet connectivity map (there is a term for it but I am no mood of searching for the exact term) to the public.
IP address is one of the easiest things to get in the internet, or at least for those who are not noobs. Wherever you go, your IP will be transmitted to some computer unless you had configured a firewall to be resilient. There was a time when I was a member of ATU 5’s virtual community, a person bragged on who he managed to trace an anonymous mail back to USC. I, who read the brag could only looked in disgust. Bragging for successfully tracking an IP address is something should not be done in the public. Only noob does that. (This statement is an exception to the earlier paragraph)

It is hard but not impossible to hide the IP but the key to protect oneself in this dangerous World Wide Web is being careful of ports. Yes, ports. Of course, the first thing to find an open port is to search for a particular IP but with a protected port, a hacker will certainly move on to an easier target save if the hacker IS determined to get something from a storage device.

Serious kinds of privacy violation are spams and Bush’s plan. Spams is one of the thing that made me to discount myself from ATU 5’s mailing list and its now dead virtual community. I also almost ask for a removal from UMIMSA’s mailing list last year because of spams. Bush on the other hand is a d*mbf*ck. All his plans are nonsense. Period.
Yes, if you want violation of privacy, it’s spams, not a list of IP that includes yours.

[101] Of Life Day

Finally, 100 posts. The exam weeks are commencing! Wish me luck.

On the last day of this year’s November, the world celebrated the Life Day. The name of such event will somehow make some people just celebrate the day without much hesitations. Of course, who won’t celebrate life after all?

On the contrary, Life Day is not about preaching for a good and a fair ways of living for the Human community but instead, it is about abolishing death sentence.

Death sentence is admittedly, might be the worst judgment one might received depending one’s perception in life and it is not a wonder to see some people would love to see the end of this horrid judgment. However, death sentence, in my opinion at least is important to today’s society.

Although I love peace, no one can preserve peace without fighting back when one is pushed against the wall. Although I hate to mention this, it is true that there will be no peace without war. We could see clearly in history, Pax Romana, the golden age of the Muslim’s civilizations, Renaissance and the era of modern world, all the people who lived in those times had to fight to preserve their civilizations. Analogically, crude methods need to be present in Human society as a way to preserve peace. Death sentence is one of these methods.

The death sentence at least sometimes acts as a deterrent to crime. It announces to the world that every action has a consequence, much like Newton’s Law of Motion. If robbing a person would bring on death sentence on the protagonist, certainly the robber would rethink his or her action or at least, I would (that if I am the robber, if).

The sentence could also keep revenge in check. Sometimes, when peace is undone, the only possible way is to execute to peace violator. If somebody murdered someone and he is allowed to live on, vendetta might arise, as the other side that suffered crime will certainly be unhappy to see murderer of their member sitting happily in the Indian Sea under the sunny sun on the beach.

Finally, it is a way to reduce the population of planet Earth. This might sound silly but one way or another it is a fact. One way to put it is to cleanse the world from evil doers.

Therefore, I am glad that I didn’t celebrate Life Day.

erratum – this is the 101st post.

[73] Of Democracy is such a foul word

Democracy is such a foul word.

One quiet night, I was in front of the computer playing Soldier of Fortune II multiplayer game. However, I was on a new server instead of redcoat.net or dontsleep.org. Those two servers were offline for unknown reason. In fact, a lot of cracked servers for SoF2 were  offline, leaving only several cracked servers located in Europe.

I was connected to a server in Austria and was playing a deathmatch game peacefully. There were eight players trying to shoot each other’s head off for a few minutes. One guy was leading the pact with unbelievable amount of frags with the second-placed player having no way of getting near the leader score. I was fighting for a second place with a grenade launcher.

In the middle of the game, a new player logged on and was playing well enough to avoid from being called a noob. After a few cycle, he was tired of deathmatch and called for a team deathmatch. The nine players voted and the motion was passed with five with against three against. The map changed and the cycle restarted. For some reasons, the new player was unsatisfied with the new game type and called for another vote, asking for infiltration game type. I love infiltration game but with only nine players, it would certainly be dull game. So, I voted against. Most of the other thought of the same thing and the motion was denied from becoming active. He was not happy with the result and called for another vote and it failed yet again.

After a few kills, he called for yet another vote for an infiltration game. Annoyed by the needless calls, I sent a global message to him asking him to stop calling for a vote. In return, he said that I cannot do anything because it is his rights. I told him later that he won’t win because he had called the same motion three times and all tries had failed.

Certainly common sense would have told him the same thing but he just wouldn’t give up.

Having enough of his nuisance, I called for a vote to kick him and it was passed swiftly. After that incident, now I remember why democracy was not practiced on redcoat.net or dontsleep.org. There will always somebody who will abuse the system.

Talk about rights and democracy.

Democracy is not the nature of human society as some would have claimed. The ideology is neither the best nor perfect; not when it is fully exercised without restrictions.

I believe in a limited democracy. The word limited is not a bad word as it would seem to be. It is merely to describe a controlled environment and it doesn’t matter whether the control is a total grip or just a couple of weak strings keeping a lot of sticks together.

Nevertheless, by uttering these words doesn’t mean that I am against freedom. I am a freedom lover. I am simply stressing that a few regulations made intact is a good thing.

Oh, did I mention that I made a new personal record for Minesweeper’s beginner level?

My record is six seconds without cheats but unfortunately for me, the world record is two seconds. I wonder how on earth somebody could complete the game without excessively being lucky. Hmm…

Oh well… Btw, read this will you?

[37] Of securing privacy online

Voila!!! The 500th visitor is from Carnegie Mellon University of Pittsburgh. I think I know who it is but it’s not important for me to reward her. It could be a he but I definitely think it’s a she.

Internet security – one of my greatest concerns for this week. I’ve installed a few firewalls and these firewalls work by blocking access to my computer (as any firewall would) and by telling me the ip addresses of the intruding persons or computers. I found out that most of the intrusions were harmless. I’d also for the first time tried to gain access into somebody else’s computer without permission. I attempted a successful invasion against a computer in RPI, New York. It wasn’t an invasion actually. It was merely a “data collection” activity. The activity was launched on my part as to race with that other person of whom would be a better data gatherer. I did nothing that could cause harm on that computer. Unfortunately the other person found out who accessed his computing machine. I did my best but the other guy is definitely a better gatherer. Nevertheless, I’ve obtained his ip.

It surprises me how the most important private information of an internet surfer can easily be obtained. With the ip address, one could find out the operating system and server information of another person easily. What was once a private information, now is a public information. It’s amazing how this scenario had been decribed by George Orwell even before the creation of the internet. Truly, privacy does not exist. Truly, George Orwell has seen the future as clearly as God would have perceived.

At this moment, I have more than 30 ip addresses in my diskette, collected through various methods. These ip addresses belong to many friends that I’ve met and known throughout the years.

Frightened of losing my privacy, I’m forcing myself to learn on how to mask my ip address from any unforeseen lurkers. Once my effort is a success, I’ll be the innocent shadow who will always be by your side.

I believe today, paranoia is not a psychological problem anymore. It’s now a must for each and everyone of us.

Well, life goes on.

This spring, __earth.blogspot.com will be moved to earthInc.da.ru. Be sure to check it out next week.

By the way, I took another test and guess who am I?

Which tarot card are you?
