[750] Of in memory, of Faz

One of Ann Arbor’s best known personalities, owner of Hello Faz Pizza, is gone.

He told people to come when they had money, but especially to come when they didn’t. He was a local icon, a businessman who said his job was not to make money but to feed people.

Faz Husain, owner of Ann Arbor’s Hello Faz Pizza, died of pulmonary fibrosis Thursday. He was 54.

Husain had been diagnosed with idiopathic lung disease several months ago. He is survived by a wife and three children.

Although he no will longer stand behind the counter of his shop at the corner of West Liberty Street and Stadium Boulevard, friends and family said the cheerful pizza man will remain in their memories.

He will remain in mine too. Though I may not know him too well, I recognize his face and enjoyed his pizzas while I was in Ann Arbor.

May God bless his soul.

p/s – testing backlinks.

pp/s – a person mailed me, asking me to let people know that a memorial service for Faz will take place at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School on Thursday the 23rd at 7pm. There’s also a website dedicated to Faz.

[707] Of all hail to the devils slayer

A post dedicated to Manchester City. All hail to the devils slayer.

This must be one of those better weeks. Just several days ago, the “devils held“.

p/s – half of total 300 tonnes of toxic waste has been removed. But there are some indications that part of the waste might have reached Muar River. Muar River is a major river and the town of Muar is a major town by the river. How major? Wikipedia says the town itself has more than 200,000 people. That’s larger than the pretentious city of Shah Alam. Is this our little China? Perhaps? Not as serious, true but still…

According to Bernama:

27,000 Sea Perch Die, Breeder Loses RM250,000

MUAR, Jan 13 (Bernama) — A company rearing sea perch fish in cages in Sungai Muar here Friday lost RM250,000 following the sudden death of 27,000 fish weighing between 500 gram to 3kg each…

… “Probably the change in the water quality as a result of the flood at Hulu Sungai Muar and toxic waste pollution from a factory nearby could have caused the death of the fish,” said the Jailani who had been breeding sea perch for the last 15 years…

This makes me wonder, how many legit dumpsite does Malaysia have and how many recorded illegal dumping are there in 2005?

pp/s – TMnet is truly impossible.

ppp/s – Did I mention that Manchester City beat Manchester United 3 to 1?

p4/s – Did I mention that Cristiano Ronaldo’s middle name is red?

p5/s – Did I mention that… bah. Read all about it at Soccernet.

p6/s – RealClimate explains the drought in the Brazilian Amazon. I get the statistics part but I can’t pretend that I fully comprehend the atmospeheric/climatology jargons though without further reading.

p7/s – holy shit. Jill Carroll is from Ann Arbor! Jill Carroll is a freelance journalist that reported for the Christian Science Monitor in Iraq before she was kidnapped. She’s still missing but I hope she’s alright.

[658] Of wildflowers by the road

I love flowers but I don’t quite go ga-ga (and wah piang! Boy, that exclamation left a deep impression on me) like girls do. Why do I like them? It’s just they’re part of green behavior kind of stuff. By they, I mean, the flowers, of course. Live flowers, not dead fresh flowers to be precise – I have a slight irritation with people that love to pick flowers. Hey, I’m a mad treehugger. What do you expect?

I paid Malacca a visit yesterday. While I was there, I noticed a few species of wildflowers which I can’t name. They grow near some bushes by some road near the town of Tampin.

I also learned that the Malaysian Prime Minister is due to visit that part of Malacca today (Alor Gajah if you’re wondering) while the Durbar is set to be held in the state later this year. There’s a better article about the Durbar at Malay Wikipedia. Maybe I’ll transwiki it later.

The focus is off by noticeable degree. In fact, I had no choice since my camera is unable to focus properly while the object is too close to the lense – yet, another reason why should get a new cam. The reason that I had wanted to get the object as close as possible to camera is, I wanted to fill the photo with the four clusters.

Much to my surprise, it was quite hard to manage. So, I settled with what I think the next best thing – focusing on the second nearest cluster of flowers and then fill available space with the nearest cluster.

Finally, could somebody identify the flower? Each cluster is as large as one’s thumb. My thumb anyway.

And yeah, Buck the Fuckeyes!

p/s – added a fellow Malaysian Wolverine into my blogroll. Poke her!

pp/s – Roni, one of the guys that I used to play hockey with at Michigan, writes songs!

ppp/s – Australia made it to the 2006 World Cup. What’s next? Penn State winning the Big Ten title? Wait a minute…

p4/s – Malaysia and Singapore might squabble like kids, but Mexico and Venezuela have refined the benchmark.

[608] Of September 16

Did you know that Lee Kuan Yew was born on September 16 1923?

I found this out after reading Lee Kuan Yew’s The Singapore Story. Also, hah, his name is Harry Lee Kuan Yew. Harry.

Consider also a much unknown fact that Malaysia was formed on the same date, 40 years later (alright, sarcasm doesn’t work on the net. Read with tongue-in-cheek). Coincidence?

Heh, now I know why the formation of Malaysia was postponed from the planned August 31 1963 to September 16 1963. Maybe this is why a lot of people are trying to shun Malaysia Day altogether.

Damn that bugger. Forever will we as Malaysians celebrate his birthday.

p/s – crazy talk.

There’s a buzz in Los Angeles this week about a certain local football team. Its senior quarterback is completing passes like a seasoned pro. Its electrifying tailback is breaking big runs and even bigger punt returns. There’s talk that maybe this could be a special season.

And USC is looking pretty good, too.

My, those Trojans must be fuming by now.

pp/s – this totally reminds me of my meeting with my econometrics professor. Who was the professor? The famed Daniel Hamermesh. Yup yup. Looks like him too.

[577] Of ReCom.org’s hacked yet again

Remember a couple of weeks earlier when ReCom.org was hacked?

Well, it happened again. This time however, the webhost has suspended ReCom.org’s account. The account has been suspended since the day before yesterday. I’m not sure when the account will be reactivated but certain individuals within ReCom.org are trying to work it out before August 20th. Wish them luck.
