[652] Of Anwar Ibrahim at Michigan

Suddenly, this letter from Malaysian student department (MSD) makes absolute sense. It’s not a “re-emphasization” of a policy. Instead, it’s simply done in the light that Anwar Ibrahim is coming to Michigan.

Anwar Ibrahim , as I have found out, will be giving a lecture at the University of Michigan this week. It should be interesting to know what he has to say, notwithstanding that I don’t fully trust him.

Most interesting is, a few people inside the Malaysian students’ association at Michigan are advising Malaysians at Michigan of the possible difficulties that may arise if any of Malaysian student attend the lecture. Too bad to see people are being coerced by irresponsible few.

Personally, I don’t sympathize with Anwar’s political ambition but MSD’s coersion is an affront to civil rights. If I were still a student there, I would have reported this infringement of rights to relevant university authority and the Michigan Student Assembly. In fact, I think I’ll zap a few mails to several students’ rep in the assembly.

It will be hilarious to see how the Malaysian ruling party’s political inflexibility will measure up against American Michigander Berkeley of the Midwest People’s Republic of Ann Arborite civil consciousness.

And pity, I graduated a few months too early. But I trust Michigan ITD will record the lecture and post it few days later on the web.

[650] Of hypocrisy in Malaysian policy

Ah, yes. Malaysian students should not get themselves into opposition activities but it’s alright to join the ruling party’s Kelab UMNO Minnesota or any other Kelab UMNO Luar Negara.

I received the following letters via Malaysian students’ association at my alma mater.

Not sure about the license but seems to be public domain. So, share away while it lasts!

Bah. If you are “Malayly-challenged“, here’s a rough translation:

President,
Malaysian students’ association (MSA),

Students’ involvement in activities that go against government policy

The government is seriously concerned with students’ involvement in activities sponsored by the Malaysian opposition parties, especially students that are subsidized by the government or any other government agency.

As such, student leaders must remind their respective association members not to attend such activities.

If there are students that are active in any opposition sponsored event, student leaders are requested to inform the Malaysian Student Department (MSD) at Chicago immediately.

Director,
MSD Chicago
[Stamp]

Practice caution – MSA presidents are the newly-instated moles of the ruling party. Now, you people will need to go underground. Heh.

This policy is not new. It’s just that the ruling party (aka the government) in the past few years have been rather flexible on it. This development is a signal that the ruling party is re-emphasizing the policy.

[648] Of annoying explosions and brats that cause the explosions

One thing that I hate about Eid in Malaysia is excessive noise due to firecrackers. Don’t get me wrong. I love firecrackers. I really do, especially roman candles. Noise is an inescapable part of enjoying firecrackers. Still, if people want to play it, especially the ones that go kaboom, I strongly suggest those people to exercise their right of having fun somewhere out of any residential area.

I cringe every time an explosion blared during a relatively calm night. Unsuspected explosions always step up my heart tempo. I minor heart attack if you will. And I think Kuala Lumpur this time around has more explosions than Baghdad, albeit less deadly.

And there you go. Another one had just gone off, along with a couple seconds of my life.

Seriously, a lot of people that are playing firecrackers are inconsiderate buggers. Since these people being blithely discourteous, from now on, I promise myself that I am going to treat myself with a bar of chocolate each time a brat loses his or her finger, eye or dick.

Yes, I hope you damned buggers lose your dick with a spectacular show of rainbow and some decibels to match it.

Hear me, if you’re in Kuala Lumpur, go to the lake garden or somewhere secluded for your activity. Or better yet, join the Al-Qaeda or American foreign legionnaires in Iraq or Hamas’ and Israeli in Israel – I don’t care which side, any will get you dead, pronto, almost; that’s good enough for me – and make all the booms you want.

And what the hell the police is doing? It’s supposed to be illegal to sell firecrackers out in the public, much less playing contrabands in the public.

[636] Of if here’s my two cents and it costs a penny for your thought, what happened to another penny?

Taxes I suppose.

Regardless, almost everybody has opinion of their own. It’s more prevalent than IPod in our society. Just log on the internet and it will overwhelm us. Sometimes, I swear I’ll puke if another person gives me a piece of his mind. This and that and that and this all over again – it just doesn’t end. It’s a perpetual blabbering that makes people goes nut. Yet, I and many others can’t seem to have enough of it. I still want to announce the world of I feel and I’m still willing to listen to others’ two cents. After years of trying to listen, I think I’ve reached a stage where I could categorize most opinions into a number of classes based on several dimensions.

In my not so humble opinion, opinion may be described by five dimensions:

Informed-uninformed dimension

An informed opinion is the best kind of opinion in this dimension. A person that expresses an informed opinion is usually familiar with the field he or she is commenting on. This doesn’t have to be the case but usually it is. As such, this kind of opinion comes from those of whom are from tertiary institutions and professional circles or at the very least, those that with knowledge or experience on a particular field.

Below informed view is one when if we see or hear it, we won’t be able to agree or disagree without further information. There’s some truth to it and we might want to believe but to accept it without scrutiny is irrational. It’s simply something that best kept at the back of our mind and revisit it later when the time is right.

At the other end of the spectrum is uninformed view. This kind of opinion is definitely disagreeable at first sight and it’s disagreeable not due to point of views or biases but purely because of facts. In short, it’s bullshit – like global wamring causes worsening earthquake or Bush is an alien from outer space. Pretending experts and worst of all, trolls, belong here. People with uninformed opinion are usually field outsiders though outsiders do offer respectable opinions from time to time.

Intelligibility

Opinion could also be seen from intelligibility. I can think of only two classes – articulateness and incoherence. An articulated view is the one that we’ll get the point even with the most artificial skimming while incoherent opinion is akin to reading or listening to a Martian. Incoherent views are usually ignored by most people and occasionally however, flaming may occur due to misunderstanding or frustration. Intelligibility is also dependent on a person ability of being concise.

Friendliness

Friendliness is highly dependent on point of views. Therefore, an opinion may be seen as friendly to a person but offensive to another.

No blood boils when one reads a friendly view. At least I won’t. This view is not too critical of an idea and there are flowery congratulations, praises and agreeable people abounding almost everywhere. Biases also an implicit characteristic – hey, they say birds of the same feather flock together.

Number two has a neutral stance. It’s could be critical or giving credit where credit is due but the bottomline is, it’s done in good faith. Most opinions of this kind are positive in nature; positive as in descriptive or antonym to normative.

Then there’s hostile view and here’s where most polemicists sit. This, coupled with incoherencies, is a recipe for mudslinging. It’s all about right versus left, Ann Coulter and Al Franken or Malaysian blogosphere own illogical Menj and silly Rajan. This particular class is where all hope of intelligent discussion is already forsaken at the earliest possible point. It’s fun though – it what makes a crowd cheers for a bull’s eye and murmurs when a punch is thrown below the belt.

Agreeability

Like friendliness, agreeability is dependent on point of view. Perhaps, agreeability depends on the previous three variables too.

Freedom

This is probably the most important variable there is when it comes to opinion. It is the one thing that determines if there is anything to hear to or read in the first place.

I once heard a joke about free speech – if here’s my two cents and it costs a penny for your thought, what happened to another penny?

Like I said earlier, taxes.

[619] Of Singaporean old building

I love a lot of things. Two of them are history and architecture. So, it shouldn’t be too astounding if I’m attracted to old buildings.

This one was taken in Chinatown, Singapore. It’s a shophouse, typical kind of building in towns and cities throughout what was once known as Malaya; Singapore included. I don’t know about Sabah and Sarawak though.

I have a picture with a row of shophouses from the same place in a previous entry of mine if you are interested.

Sometimes, I can’t help but feel amazed at how two countries have so much in common but simultaneously so different from each other. Sometimes, it’s shocking to see how two countries may have shared history or even dependent on each other but the air in between them is so full of distrust.

Human nature I suppose.

Kill all Singaporeans! LOL!

p/s – Judith Miller is freed. According to NYT (reg. req.):

Ms. Miller was freed after spending more than 12 weeks in jail, during which she refused to cooperate with the inquiry. Her decision to testify was made after she had obtained what she described as a waiver offered “voluntarily and personally” by a source who said she was no longer bound by any pledge of confidentiality she had made to him. Ms. Miller said the source had made clear that he genuinely wanted her to testify.

That source was I. Lewis Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff, according to people who have been officially briefed on the case. Ms. Miller met with Mr. Libby on July 8, 2003, and talked with him by telephone later that week, they said.

If there is justice in this world, Cheney will be in trouble soon. I believe there’s justice somewhere underneath a dusty table. Hey, Tom DeLay finally got indicted. That should be of some proof that this world is not too unfair.
