[87] Of I dream of an utopia

The future that I dream of, an utopian dream.

Once in a while during those times when I was younger than today, the days when I would look into the clouds and think of something that will not relate to my problem in life, the days when a sleep could solve all of my problem, I had always dreamed of an elaborate future society. With details so minute in a scale, I could be God of an advanced populace, managing their life.

The future of which I dreamed of will be a total triumph for the environmentalism movement. The waste management will be so efficient that almost none of the waste, whether it is solid or not, will be recycled. The phrase “want not, waste not” will extinct.

The future holds so many hope and dream. Nightmare could also come true with nuclear holocaust or widespread conventional war. But looking at the bright side, it could be a utopian dream. Described below is my utopia, a situation where environmentalism (rather than democracy) is the crux of Human society.

Pollution

First of the all, the cities of future time will be the main concentration of the Human society as it has for thousand of years. Since the cities contain ton of activities, pollution will be produced most there. To protect the global ecosystem, each city will have lofty towers that will function as supporting structures that will make sure that a city will be enclosed totally within a giant sphere. This sphere is not a physical object but rather, a shield, a cell’s wall that will function a lot like a plant’s membrane that will allow osmosis or more accurately, reverse-osmosis-styled process. The shield will have the ability to filter out any harmful gases or particles from crossing it. This will form an isolated system for a particular city.

All the pollution produced by the city will be recycled or at least being reprocessed locally. For instance, any gas produced by a plant will not be given the right to pass through the shield membrane. This in turn will make a waste build up in the city. For this reason, the processing ability must be both fast and efficient. The rate of the waste processing ability must be at least equal to the pollution that is being produced. It is essential to have a sure ability of pollution reprocessing before the shield is constructed. To ensure this, every polluting entity will have its own pollution eliminator.

In addition, having an enclosed environment for the city will allow the administration of the city to control the condition of the city. To obtain that capability, the shield should have the power to filter the amount of radiation that is allowed to pass through the shield. Having a shield that will sort out both particles and radiation could be hard. Therefore, the shield should have two layers of membrane; one layer will act as a radiation shield while the other as a particle shield. With the ability to sort of radiation, light pollution and in effect, the problem of reprocessing all kind of pollutions will be solved.

If the shield could be seen by naked eye, it will probably not be geometrically hemispherical but rather will have an almost flat surface at the top. A few strong towers will support the shield from within the shield.

Transportation

Secondly, the issue of transportation will be addressed. Ground transportation will mostly be based on magnetic technology, such as the current Maglev train in France. There will be magnetic track in tubes running in the city from one end to another. Tire will be placed by magnetic field generator that will allow vehicles to move forward, backward etc without friction on the track. The vehicles will need not to be fed with fuel but instead, it will run on electricity thus generating no byproduct with the likes of sulphur or carbon dioxide.

The power source of the vehicle will be produced from the movement of the vehicles relative to the track. Nevertheless, there will be some vehicles that will have hover capabilities. Hovering capabilities will allow the driver to travel off the track.

Most likely, the city will only depends on public transportation, not like the present time. The public transportation will be efficient, running 24 – 7. The need to have a personal vehicle will be eliminated although the production of such a vehicle will not be prohibited.
For inter-cities transportation, there will a huge tube connecting cities much like today’s highways. These tubes will also act as pipe lines, power lines and communication lines.

Power

As mentioned above, these tubes will produce electricity. So, while the tubes are serving the populace as a mean of clean transportation, it will also act as a clean, enormous power generator. This idea will make power failure almost unimaginable since these tubes are omnipresent in the city.

Tomorrow’s power plants will be clean-based plant, neither producing harmful gases and particles like coal power plant nor destroying to habitat of animals like hydroelectric power plants. Instead, fusion will play an important role in providing electricity. Solar panels will be placed in the hot blazing barren deserts and wind turbines will be placed in places where strong wind is prevalent, usually in the middle of the seas, like what is being plan somewhere in North Atlantic Sea near Europe. Some of the energy will also be produced in the orbit of Earth and beam down to a receptor on Earth. As a summary, clean energy will dominate the energy market.

To be continued…

[79] Of renewable energy

This is going to be my first serious entry for the first time after a very, very long time.

The whole universe is made up from an abstract and a concrete object – energy and matter in a strict sense. Most physics and mathematical equations that we have ever encountered are made up to explain the behaviors of energy and matter in one way or another. Take the special theory of relativity itself; E = mc; for E is energy, m is mass and c is the speed of light. The equation simply states that energy and matter are interconnected; energy can be converted to matter with a “if and only if” relationship.

That relationship without doubt strengthened my argument beyond reasonable doubt.
Both objects (if both of these things are allowed to be called as object at all) can be found everywhere where time is defined. The area where time is defined is from the center of the universe to its still expanding edge of course. On our precious planet herself, energy and matter are plentiful where it’s under the water, on land or in the blue sky.

Nevertheless, most the energy presents are wasted without even 1% of its potential tapped successful with full efficiency. Take the unleaded fuel used by the everyday vehicles for a point. The engine, particularly the Japanese-made vehicle, is designed to be at maximum efficiency level allowed by the current technology. Although this may sounds good, the real fact is the current technology does not allow 100% effectiveness. Some of the energy produced (or rather lots of them) are wasted simply by excess heat. There is another case that supports this notion of wasted energy – the production of energy by various power plants. These plants produce energy but this energy is needed to be transported for the plants to the users. During transportation, our technology allows us to reduce the wasting of energy to numerous methods (the usage of transformers for instance) but still, precious amount of energy is still wasted away.

The production of energy is not simply a matter of producing it and transferring it effectively. To produce energy, coal, oil and gas are burned; matters are separated and as a direct result, more carbon dioxide in the air, damaged local ecosystem and the risk of harmful radiation.

The only way to evade these problems is the usage of renewable energy. Renewable energy is a “some type” of energy that could be produced without the need to worry about depleting resources (do not confuse it with the “energy type” that divides energy into heat, potential, kinetics, etc. And certainly, energy can’t be produced. The term “energy production” does not mean the “creation of energy”).

Renewable energy envisions us forever to have the resources needed to produce energy endlessly. Wind, hydro, thermal and solar powers are some of the exciting possibilities. To add to the bright advantage, renewable energy doesn’t pollute badly but then again, they pollute at the lowest imaginable level which literally means no pollution. (The building of dam nevertheless needs to be avoided for although it is considered as an act of producing clean energy, dam destroyed the local ecosystem and forever alters the condition of a habitat.)

When it comes to renewable energy (a subset of clean energy), cost for sure will follow up and discourage its usage. The initial cost of settings up the equipments is no doubt is high but its long term benefits far exceeds its short term cost. As comparison, coal plants need a continuous supply of coal, a resource which we know is fast diminishing. A lack of supply means an increase in price and therefore, the cost of running a coal plant will increase with time. The cost of running solar panels or wind turbines on the other hand per unit time will continue to be lowered as there is no cost other than maintenance. Sure, it is an economic way of making things done.

As you can see, the habit of using renewable energy does not only favor environmentalism idea but it also helps capitalism to do business for the “good for us all”. And the efficiency of wind turbine and solar panel is increasing steadily and there is no hesitation that it efficiency will be raise to a very efficient level.

The future holds a more thrilling option. Fusion, cold fusion and others provide us the option of producing energy without having to worry about where to get the resources. Although I hate Star Trek so much that I would love to go back in time and eliminated Gene Roddenberry, the idea of warp core very much possible, at least in theory. The idea is mainly based in matter-antimatter reaction which I will not indulge myself to explain as I am no physicist. However, the warp core ability to produce substantial amount of energy from matter, in fact from any matter without concerning ourselves with whether the matter is uranium, hydrogen or any other matters is truly magnificent.

If this happens, energy will be as free as air. No cost with no string attached. Simply free. Isn’t that want we want in reality?

p/s – I’ve just joined the UM Solar Car Team’s Power Team. We are mainly resposible for the vehicle power source. Plus, surprisingly, Malaysia Airlnes is one of the sponsors of the team. And, we had USD 1 000 000 last year to develop the car. Talk about a rich club in a rich university.

[74] Of reply to recent letter to Lee R. Raymond

Read this.

An excerpt from a reply that I received. To be honest, I didn’t write a letter but I did send something to them:

I have been asked to respond to your recent letter to Lee R. Raymond regarding our position on global climate change.

Climate change is an extremely important and complex matter, which has elicited a number of significant proposed responses in both the public and private sectors. Measures such as the Kyoto Protocol, for example, contain mandates that would prove misguided, would be quite damaging and would not achieve their intended results. The protocol also falls far short of treaty guidelines established by the U.S. Senate (95-0 vote) in 1997. This vote shows the widespread and bipartisan opposition to the Kyoto concept and reflects strong concerns of organized labor, farm, consumer and business groups.

ExxonMobil has undertaken a number of economically justified steps that reduce carbon emissions. For example, we have installed over 2000 megawatts of cogeneration (simultaneous production of electricity and
steam) capacity, which typically reduces energy use by 30%. We are also involved with automobile companies in joint research that could significantly reduce future emissions by, for example, using fuel cells powered by hydrogen from advanced gasoline. We have partnered with the group American Forests to plant trees across the United States and more recently Siberia and Germany. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, and this partnership has planted 2 million trees. Related efforts have planted millions more in areas around the world. We have already improved the energy efficiency of our plants by over 35% during the last 25 years, saving the equivalent of 71 billion gallons of oil.

Noting your comment regarding the state of the science related to climate change, I would like to call two recent publications to your attention. One is “The Science of Regional and Global Change” by the National Research Council of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. The other is an article “Rising Global Temperatures, Rising Uncertainty” by Richard A. Kerr in the April 13, 2001, issue of the journal, Science. Both publications help to highlight the many fundamental gaps in our current understanding.

I hope these additional materials and comments will convey a greater perspective on our views. You may also be interested in our brochure “Global Climate Change” and other information on the topic, which can be viewed, on our website at www.exxonmobil.com. We remain committed, today and for the future, to supporting responsible public policies and private actions to address the many aspects of climate change.

Sincerely,

Kenneth P. Cohen

Yeah, right.

[24] Of cooling Antarctica

Well, another chaos in the environmental science. Scientists have found out that Antarctica is actually not shrinking nor it is warming up. Instead, it is cooling down. The new data suggest that Antarctica is unique compare to the other parts of the world which had generally warmed up by 0.60 degree Celsius for the past decade. What can this mean?

There seems to be a confusion concerning global warming currently. To some, who has always deny the existence of global warming, say that this is a prove that global warming is based on erroneous extrapolated data. Whatever it is, I wish I could believe that but the evidence of global warming to me is undeniable. Although Antarctica is cooling down, it doesn’t mean global warming is a bogus. While the South Pole is not warming up, the rest of the world is becoming a living hell. And it’s proven that the Earth increasing global temperature is not merely part of Earth’s natural cycle. Furthermore, at this very moment, Europe’s largest glacier is melting at a dangerous rate. That, must mean something.
