[518] Of diplomatic relationship of ASEAN

In the recent months or years, relationship between Southeast Asian countries has been spiced up to a whole new level. Below is how I see the origin of conflicts.

Myanmar – we are moving progressively towards a democratic system and ASEAN agrees with us. Suu Kyi is free? Go arrest her again.

Thailand – it’s not our fault. We are a peaceful nation. Those troubles in the south are caused by Malaysia, in the west, Myanmar, in the north China and in the east Cambodia and Laos! Thai tea anyone?

Laos – we’re Communist and we’re poor. So, we’ll keep our mouth shut and let you Capitalist pigs do your work. We also kick every Laotian that disagrees with our chairman. Just shut up and we won’t kick you to kingdom come.

Vietnam – Spratly is ours! We’ve proven that by confronting the Chinese navy! Want shrimp? You can’t impose tariff on us! We are not dumping!

Cambodia – we love revolutions! Viva la revolucion!

Malaysia – we are probably the second richest after those bloody kiasunistic Singaporeans (we’ll be first, don’t worry lah) but why does everybody hate us? Before you answer that, could we have Sipadan and Ligitan? Oh, and Ambalat too. Along with Pulau Batu Putih and Spratly. Hey Brunei, want to join the Federation? Hey Aceh, we’ll treat you better than Jakarta if you’d just join us. Can we have Pattani too?

Brunei – oil, oil, oil. Who needs democracy when you have all the oil in the world?

Singapore – we are richer than you, better than you and most likely sexier than you but can we have that water for free please? No? Oh come on! Quit being a bitch. Just give it to us for free. Why are you so like that one?

Indonesia – this oil subsidy is costing us gazillion of Rupiahs. We can’t afford it but Indonesians will hate us if we remove it. We need scapegoats. Hey Malaysia, quit treating us like that! Australia you racist white man! Timor you foul betrayer! America you devil! All of you are stinking imperialists! Rise Indonesia rise! For Indonesia Raya!

Philippines – die rebels die! Hmm… Killing these rebels are tougher than it ought to be. Oh, no. More demostration?

Timor Laste – help! Gankers are everywhere!

Sekian, terima kasih.

p/s – Happy Earth Day Earthy. I’m not refering to myself of course.

Save the blue sky!

[510] Of Michigan’s deficit

I was browsing for some jobs somewhere. There, I saw a position at the Michigan’s House of Representatives. The job description is as follow:

Job Qualifications
Interns should display an interest in politics/public policy, exhibit ample written and oral communication skills, maintain the ability to effectively convey ideas in a diplomatic manner, and be adept in working with diverse groups of people and perspectives.

Job Description
Interns would be responsible for assisting policy analysts with research pertaining to the following legislative issue areas: energy and technology, labor and industry, economy, transportation, education, mental health, banking, criminal justice, family and children services, environment, agriculture, tax and healthcare. We are flexible about times, days and the number of hours worked each week;

The catch line however:

however, given the state’s nearly $1 billion budget deficit, interns cannot be paid.

Somebody is actually using the deficit as a reason not to pay. Pretty hilarious, to me at least.

[502] Of Thrall’s going to kick our collective ass

The reason why World of Warcraft is currently the best MMORPG of all time and why it is a bestselling game.

Though I was not in that successful raid of the filthy Orc’s capital as shown in the video, I did join another raid on the same city yesterday. Result?

That’s me. Dead. Another many others.
One problem with huge raid is leadership. Most of the times, while the voice of the mentats can easily be heard prior to an attack, as the time progresses and the target in sight, voice of the leader will usually lost among the noise. Once that happened, a few will rise up to try to take up the leadership. And if none stepped up, the raid is doomed to fail.

In yesterday raid, the initial leader failed to assert his control over time and thus, a few others took the initiative to lead. It was great but the raid was a failure despite the majority of us managed to get behind enemy line and be inside the throne room.

Reason for failure – the lack of obsessive-compulsive behavior. People just gave up.

The plan for the raid was impressive nonetheless. In total, in maximum estimate, 80 people were involved, with at most half were high level players. Two groups were form. One was the main driver while the other was a diversionary force.

It was too complex to be done with large number of people with too short a time. I had my doubt at first though I didn’t voice it. A paladin however did voice his doubt. But a person remark to the paladin, in all hilarity, “of all persons, it’s a paladin that’s having doubt”.

The push against the enemy line was hard. We were confronted from the north and after half an hour, from the south too, making any strategic retreat impossible. Luckily, we managed to break loose after a few tries thanks to the help of the diversionary force. Our back was covered by the secondary column and thus, we were able to concentrate on the major front.

A tribute to taurenslayer, the initiator of the raid and errik for taking up the torch. Also, to all Horde that died valiantly… in their own capital.

[475] Of development and the environment

There seems to be a strong relationship between the level of economic development and environmental protection. I’ve always suspected this and a post in a forum reminded me of it. The poster presented the idea and asked why that seems to be so. I offered her a short answer. A few hours later, I sat down somewhere and gave it a further consideration quietly.

I think the relationship between the two aspects is actually the opportunity cost – the cost of investing in one variable is the forgone benefit of other variable. In our context, if a country is poor and lack capital, the society there will be more concerned with wealth buildup instead of safeguarding the Earth. The cost of protecting the environment in term of development is too great; that country cannot afford to protect the environment at the expense of development.

The enforcement of environmental laws needs resource for implementation. If a country has no sufficient resource or wealth, then environmental laws enforcement greatly forgoes the benefit of accumulating capital. That is, the resource will be better put in use in improving the economy. Therefore, better attention will be given to economic issues instead of environmental ones, given that a country or a person is poor. Now, if that is so, the only way to instill the care for the environment is to reduce the forgone benefit of economic growth while engaging in environmental protection.

The reduction of forgone benefit cost is possible if wealth increases. This grows from the idea of diminishing returns – the more one has of a good, the less one wants more of it. In other words, another additional some sort of unit of wealth will have less benefit to the society of great wealth than to some improvised populace. Hence, as wealth increases, the cost of forgone benefit decreases.

Furthermore, environmental protection will only come when the cost of forgoing economic pursue is lower (or possibly lower or equal to) than the cost of forgoing environmental protection. Hence, if one cares for the environment, accumulation of wealth should be paramount because the accumulation of wealth reduces the cost of forgoing development.

One possible supporting proof is the possible correlation between wealth of countries with the strength of environmental laws and its enforcement; developed nations do seem to have stricter environmental requirements relative to poor countries. It would be interesting to see if there is an actual data set on this.

So, let’s all get rich in the name of the environment!

I’m not quite certain on this however. Some variable must have been left unconsidered and thus, I dare not assert this model as perfect.

p/s – there seems to be a character encoding problem with this new template.

pp/s – godddamn! This entry took some serious proofread. When I first read the completed version, I was lost in my own words!

ppp/s – the Malay version of Windows XP will be shipped soon! But, given that the OS uses confusing Malay terms and it’s sort of XP lite, I’ll stick with the English version, thank you. (Via)

p4/s – this is, um, retarded.

p5/s – updated the about section.

[469] Of law for dogs

I know California is green-friendly and all but humane dog law that grants certain rights to all dogkind?

Look:

SAN FRANCISCO – In this famously dog-friendly city, dog owners are “pet guardians,” the local shelter keeps strays in “apartments” – and, as of Tuesday, man’s best friend is entitled to certain perks.

A new “backyard dog” law says canines are entitled to a change of water once a day, palatable and nutritious food in a non-tipping bowl, and a dog house with a top, bottom and three sides. Tying up the dog is highly discouraged.

I’m all for humane treatment of all living things but a weird law is not my cup of tea. Don’t the legislators in California have something better to do, like, say, requiring people to brush their teeth daily?

And I thought only in SimCity where this type of stuff happens.
