Fair use.\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/maddruid.com\/Graphics\/theStarSeaChange20070121.png?w=580&#038;ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/thestar.com.my\/news\/story.asp?file=\/2007\/1\/21\/nation\/16586439&#038;sec=nation&#038;focus=1\">More<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>BANGI: The warming of the Indian Ocean in the past 20 to 30 years \u2014 brought about by global warming \u2014 could have played a part in the unusual weather which caused flooding in Johor and other parts of Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p>Climate expert Associate Prof Dr Fredolin Tangang said the rising temperature of the Indian Ocean, brought about by a series of events starting with the melting of ice in Greenland, could have caused the unusual and adverse weather conditions in South-East Asia.<\/p>\n<p>An oceanographer based at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia&#8217;s School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences, Dr Fredolin said the Indian Ocean was cooled by a natural phenomenon which oceanographers labelled the &#8220;Great Ocean Conveyor Belt.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The conveyor belt or <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thermohaline_circulation\">thermohaline circulation<\/a> is featured in <a href=\"https:\/\/maddruid.com\/?p=359\"><em>The Day After Tomorrow<\/em><\/a> and Al Gore&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/maddruid.com\/?p=794\">An Inconvenient Truth<\/a><\/em>. <em>The Day After Tomorrow<\/em> is fiction of course. A great fiction, that is.<\/p>\n<p>While we talk about flood, <a href=\"https:\/\/maddruid.com\/?p=888\">El Ni\u00c3\u00b1o<\/a> might have finally <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/thestar.com.my\/news\/story.asp?file=\/2007\/1\/15\/nation\/20070115181535&#038;sec=nation\">shown its head<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong> <\/strong>SHAH ALAM: There may be dry months ahead for Selangor.<\/p>\n<p>Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo said weather reports indicated that the state might face a drought caused by the El Nino phenomenon from February to August.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>El Ni\u00c3\u00b1o was declared official as early as <a href=\"https:\/\/maddruid.com\/?p=885\">September last year<\/a>. Despite the massive flood-causing torrential rain, El Ni\u00c3\u00b1o is supposed to bring in drier season to Southeast Asia. I am not a climatologist but I do try to keep up with any event that has the slightest link to global warming and climate change at large. It is because of the contradiction \u2014 heavy rain in spite of the effect of El Ni\u00c3\u00b1o \u2014 that I posed this question: <a href=\"https:\/\/maddruid.com\/?p=1016\">is the record rainfall in Johor part of a larger trend?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I hope the question will be answered by a report <a href=\"https:\/\/maddruid.com\/?p=1039\">commissioned a few weeks ago<\/a> by the government.<\/p>\n<p>And then of course, on February 2, the publication of the <a href=\"https:\/\/maddruid.com\/?p=1014\">Fourth Assessment Report<\/a> of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which will discuss global warming from a global perspective.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last December, Utusan Malaysia had global warming as the subject of its front page.
