The tail end of Indira Gandhi’s government was pictured by authoritarianism (the State of Emergency between 1975 and 1977). High growth rates didn’t follow. She called for elections, expecting the electorale will vindicate her rule – but was booted out.

Her authoritarian tendencies returned when she became Prime Minister again – and the rupee also lost 40% of its value. Its only her son that started losening the strings to democratic and economic freedoms.
